Reflection: Ensuring that students and parents are kept up to date about current assignments is essential. Within my classroom, I have 3 methods for students to keep track of assignments and activities. First, I have a homework board posted by the door. Each day, I take 2-3 minutes to point out the assignment for the following day, and clarify any questions that students may have. Secondly, our school utilizes a "homework hotline," where students and parents may call the school, dial the desired extension, and listen to specific homework assignments for the specific class. Teachers update their hotlines either daily or weekly (depending on their preference). I choose to update mine nightly. Lastly, I have a school website. Within my site, I have a page dedicated to posting nighly homework assignments. Therefore, I have attached a a "snap shot" of my homework page from my website.
Parents have commented at times about how appreciative they are about having the homework hotline and the teacher websites to utilize for checking assignments. While each student has a planner and is supposed to be writing homework assignments in them daily, this does not always happen. I feel very fortunate to be in a school district that embraces various technological tools that help to provide extra information to students and parents. Students in our district cannot easily say, "I didn't know what the assignment was so I didn't complete it."
